Employee Involvement Is Key in Change Management
Employee Involvement Is Key in Change ManagementEmployee Involvement Is Key in Change ManagementA wise person once said never to expect one hundred percent support from any individual who was not personally involved in devising a change which had an impact on his work. The wise person was right. People dont mind change once they get used to the idea and have had the opportunity to have an impact on the direction of the change. Even asking an employees opinionand then later choosing another direction is significantly better than never giving the employee a voice in the change at all. Creating a work environment in which employees feel as if they have the power to initiate change is also positive and a tribute to your work culture. But, more frequently, employees find themselves caught up in changes that others are initiating. In ansicht instances, what employees do mind is being changed. Having no voice in a change that will affect their job or workflow is treating your adult employee s like children. They resent it, and you have created something for them to push back againstnever a good situation when you need your employees to change. In any change, especially ones that affect a complete organization, it is impossible to involve every employee in each decision. Respondents to ourchange management questions over the years suggest, however, that when change works, the organization has gone out of its way to use employee involvement. Employee involvement is the difference between sad and unhappy foot draggers and engaged, excited employees who were trusted to give their input. You dont want to create the first when you need change to occur in your workplace. Employee Involvement in Effective Change Management These are the steps youll want to follow as you involve your employees in helping make a change. Create a plan for involving as many people as possible, as early as possible, in the change process. You need to make this plan with your change team, your s enior managers, whoever will be leading the charge with the change. This senior or management team plays a critical role in building and developing support for change.Involve all stakeholders, process owners, and employees who will feel the impact of the changes, as much as possible, in the learning, planning, decisions, and implementation of the change. Often, in change management, a small group of employees learns important information about change and change management. If they fail to share the information with the rest of the employees, the remaining employees will have trouble catching up with the learning curve. It is a significant point in change management. You cannot leave any employees behind. If a small group makes the change management plans, employees affected by the decisions will not have had needed time to analyze, think about, and adjust to the new ideas. If you leave employees behind, at any stage of the process, you open the door in your change management process, for misunderstanding, resistance, and hurt. Even if employees cannot affect the overall decision about change, involve each employee in meaningful decisions about their work unit and their work. One effective way to do this is at the departmental level. When the changes are in progress, talk to your team and then, to each employee individually. Your purpose in having these conversations is to let each employee participate in identifying the impact of the decisions on their job.Build measurement systems into the change process that tell people when they are succeeding or failing. Provide consequences in either case. Employees who are positively working with the change need rewards and recognition. After allowing some time for employees to pass through the predictable stages of change, negative consequences for failure to adopt the changes, are needed. You cannot allow the nay-sayers to continue on their negative path forever they sap your organization of time, energy, and focus, and ev entually, affect the morale of the positive many. The key is to know, during your change management process, when to say, enough is enough. Most organizations wait too long, and employees have a powerful opportunity to inflict damage on all of your hopes and dreams. Help employees feel as if they are involved in a change management process that is larger than themselves by taking these actions to involve employees in making the needed changes effectively. When the progress of the changes is measured, youll be happy that you did.

The reason you should always be aiming higher
The reason you should always be aiming higherThe reason you should always be aiming higherJames Carville and Paul Begalatell a storyabout the choice a lion faces in deciding to hunt for a mouse or an antelope. A lion is fully capable of capturing, killing, and eating a field mouse, they explain. But it turns out that the energy required to do so exceeds the caloric content of the mouse itself. Antelopes, in contrast, are much bigger animals, so they take more speed and strength to capture. But once captured, an antelope can provide days of food for the lion. The story, as you may have guessed, is a microcosm for life. Most of us go after the mice, instead of the antelopes. We perceive the mouse as a sure thing, and the antelope as more risky. Mice are everywhere antelopes are few and far between. Whats more, everyone around us is busy hunting mice. We assume that, if we decide to go for antelopes, we might fail and make a fool out of ourselves. This is also the moral of the Icarus myth . His father, the craftsman Daedalus, built wings out of wax for himself and his son to escape the island of Crete. Daedalus warned his son to follow his flight path and not fly too close to the Sun.You probably know what happened next Icarus ignored his fathers warnings and soared near the Sun. His wings melted, sending Icarus on a plunge into the sea, where he tragically drowned. The lessons of the myth are clear Those who soar melt their wings and die. Those who stay the course and obey instructions escape the island and survive. There welches a guy in the 1970s who rode his way to the top by rejecting this myth. He initially became famous by lifting some weights. He then made some movies. He then governed a state that hasthe worlds fifth largest economy. In his surprisingly good autobiography,Total Recall, Arnold Schwarzenegger writes When every aspiring actor was trying to land bit parts in movies, I held out to be a leading man. When every politician tries to work his or her way up from local office, I went straight for the governorship. We assume that were not cut out to aim straight for the top. We believe that the kind of people who can fly high have better wings immune to melting.Michelle Obama dispelled this myth in a recent interview. Here is the secret, shesaid. I have been at probably every powerful table that you can think of, I have worked at nonprofits, I have been at foundations, I have worked in corporations, served on corporate boards, I have been at G-summits, I have sat in at the UN They are not that smart.Let me repeat thatThey are not that smart. They just know what most of us never learned Theres far less competition at the top. Everyone else is busy flying low, chasing mice, assuming they cant be the governor, the manager, or the leading actor.Theres a second half to the Icarus myth- one that you probably havent heard. In addition to telling Icarus to not to fly too high, Daedalus also told him not to fly toolowbecause the water would rui n his wings.Yet the second half of the myth doesnt make the cut. Society seduced us into believing that flying lower is safer than flying higher, that coasting is better than soaring, and that small dreams are preferable to big ones.Altitude, as any pilot will tell you, is your friend. If your engine quits when youre flying high, youve got options for gliding your plane to safety. But at low altitudes, the possibilities in flight- like the possibilities in life- are more limited (theHudson Rivermight be your only bet). So, next time, aim a little higher. Instead of going for a masters, apply for a PhD. Dont look for a job comfortably within your reach aim for one seemingly above your resume.Take comfort in knowing that Daedalus had his physics all wrong. Air gets cooler, not hotter, as you ascend.Your wings wont melt. Youll grow the ones you need on the way up. And even if you dont reach the Sun, youll soar higher than you would have before.InspirationSeth Godin, The Icarus Deception .Ozan Varol is a rocket scientist turned law professor and bestselling author.Click hereto download a free copy of his e-book, The Contrarian Handbook 8 Principles for Innovating Your Thinking. Embracing technology key to success in advertising world
Embracing technology key to success in advertising world Embracing technology key to success in advertising worldPosted October 13, 2011, by Josie Chun The marketing and advertising industries were amongst the hardest hit during the recent economic downturn but opportunities and openings are still to be found. The tight market has forced advertisers to start doing things a little differently, and that has opened up new opportunities for newcomers and for people with innovative ideas. How the industry is changing Like all professions, advertising is an industry in flux especially with the rise of new technologies and social networking changing the entire media landscape. Lachlan Brahe, managing director of emitch, a digital advertising and zugnglich marketing agency, has seen an explosion of new opportunities in his fast-growing area. Our area of digital media has experienced growth despite the downturn, says Brahe. The key to keeping up with the times, according to Brahe, is to emb race new technologies. These types of new channels/platforms will just speed up the development of more engaging forms of advertising, meaning that brands need to determine legitimate ways to be involved in social groups and pertinent ways of involving themselves in the conversations that arise online. Another reason for the increasing popularity of digital media channels for advertisers is the ease in charting the direct results of advertisements in a way that was hitherto impossible through web besucherzahlen and click-through rates. A key reason for their popularity is the accountability that these channels afford advertisers. In economic conditions such as what weve been experiencing in the past year or so, its most helpful for businesses to understand the return on investment they get from marketing expenditure and digital marketing affords some robust metrics and ability to analyse this. Well-known advertising guru Siimon Reynolds has been in the industry for many years and h as become a master of traditional media forms, but isnt fazed by the new technologies. The basic principles remain the same, despite changing delivery methods. All industries fragment over time, and the media and advertising industry is no different. All of a sudden we have many more options from a media point of view, and this complexity at first spooks people. Yes, theres complexity, but its easy to understand. But the thing is that communication is always the same. Its still all about selling. Its like youre sitting down with someone and youre convincing them to buy your product, but in this case its in an online ad or a Twitter page. Youve just got to remember that no matter what medium you use, youve just got to be persuasive, youve got to be liked, and youve got to make sense, says Reynolds. How the downturn affected the industry Reynolds acknowledges that cost-cutting and hiring reductions have had some negative effects on the industry, but emphasises that there are still op portunities for those with fresh ideas and a fresh attitude. On the negative side, we all know that theyve cut a lot of staff and dont want to employ many people. But I will say this those kinds of statistics dont affect the individual. Dont worry about the economy, just worry about the interview going well, and you can still make it. People defeat themselves by assuming they cant get a job, but thats absolutely untrue. Theres always a place for good people. In fact, the economic downturn opened up the field and had some positive effects. Agencies want to employ juniors because theyre cheaper, so theres been good opportunities for getting into the industry. Also, companies are in trouble so theyre looking for alternatives. So if someone comes in and makes a good case, then possibly they can get an opportunity that they might not have had when life was comfortable inside that agency. So if youre hoping to enter the world of advertising, embrace the latest trends and technologies, ap proach them with passion, and foster an ability to think outside the square and theres nothing to stop you from thriving in this exciting and stimulating profession.Bachelor of Business (absatzwirtschaft)Study modeOnlinePayment optionsHECS-HELPUpfront paymentCourse guide+ FREE eBrochureEnquire Online Nadim ElRahi - Marketing MangerJames Ellender - General Manager, Marketing and StrategyInterested in becoming a?AccountantOffice AdministratorManagement ConsultantMarketing ManagerMarketing OfficerPopular Career Searchesdiploma in advertising melbourneadvertising courses australiagovernment funded visual merchandising course brisbanegovernment funded visual merchandising course perthsocial science degree career opportunitiesMarketing CoursesBachelor of Applied Business (Marketing)Enquire Online Enquire OnlineBachelor of Digital MediaEnquire Online Enquire OnlineBachelor of CommunicationEnquire Online Enquire OnlineMaster of CommunicationEnquire Online Enquire OnlineJosie ChunRelated Ar ticlesBrowse moreAdvertisingJob hunting tipsHow to get a job in advertisingWith shows like The Gruen Transfer, 30 Seconds and Mad Men all centring on the ad world, the advertising industry is looking sexier than ever.Marketing6 Reasons Why Marketing Could Be Your Dream CareerIf youve got a way with words, images, people and strategy, and are plugged into whats now, you could have what it takes to enjoy a successful and stimulating career in marketing.MarketingMarketing career fact sheetTheres more to being a marketing professional than you think.
