10 Resume Tips You Havent Heard Before

10 Resume Tips You Haven't Heard Before 10 Resume Tips You Haven't Heard Before Having a well-crafted resume can be the key to getting your foot in the door at the company of your dreams. But figuring out how to make your resume fully representative of your experience and also stand out is easier said than done. After all, hiring managers and recruiters generally only spend about 7 seconds reading your resume before deciding whether to move forward or not. Most people know the basics of how to put together a decent work history, but here are some tips you probably haven’t heard before that can help your resume stand up to the 7-second test. If you’re applying to positions in the city or town you already live in, then go ahead and include your address. In this case, it lets the hiring manager know you’re already in the area and could theoretically start working right away. But if you’re targeting jobs in another area and you’d need to move in order to start working, it’s probably a good idea to leave your current address off of your resume. Why? Recruiters are sometimes less excited to interview candidates from another city or state, since they often require relocation fees. It may be poor form to drop names in everyday life, but you absolutely should do it on your resume. If you’ve worked with well-known clients or companies, go ahead and include them by name. Something like: “Closed deals with Google, Toyota and Bank of America” will get recruiters’ attention in no time flat. You might not think to look to your annual review for resume material, but checking out the positive feedback you’ve received in years past can help you identify your most noteworthy accomplishments and best work attributes - two things that should definitely be highlighted on your resume. Including specific feedback you’ve received and goals you’ve met can help you avoid needing to use “fluff” to fill out your work experience. Many companies and recruiters use keyword-scanning software as a tool to narrow the job applicant pool. For this reason, it’s important to include keywords from the job description in your resume - but don’t go overboard. Recruiters can spot “keyword stuffing” a mile away. There are two types of email addresses you shouldn’t use on your resume or when applying to a job via email: your current work email address, or an overly personal or inappropriate email address, like loverguy22@gmail.com . Stick with something professional based on your name in order to make the best possible impression. There’s no need to list skills that most people in the job market have ( Think : Microsoft Office, email, Mac and PC proficient), which can make it look like you’re just trying to fill up space on the page. Keep your skills section short, and only include impactful skills that are relevant to the job you’re applying to. Including links to social media accounts on a resume is becoming more and more common. But it’s important to distinguish between professional accounts- like a LinkedIn profile or Instagram account you manage for work- and non-professional ones, like your personal Twitter or Facebook account. While it might be tempting to include a personal account in order to show recruiters who you are, you’re better off only listing accounts that are professionally-focused. Save your winning personality for an in-person interview . Not all hobbies deserve a place on your resume, but some do. Hobbies that highlight positive personality qualities or skills that could benefit you on the job are worth including. For example, running marathons (shows discipline and determination) and blogging about something related to your field (shows creativity and genuine interest in your work) are hobbies that will cast you in the best possible light and might pique a recruiter’s interest. Hardworking, self-motivated, self-sufficient, proactive and detail-oriented are all words you’ll find on most people’s resumes. But most job seekers are motivated and hardworking, so these traits don’t really set you apart from the rest of the applicant pool. Instead, focus on the specific skills and accomplishments that make you different from everyone else applying to the position. Keeping a log of your work accomplishments and positive feedback as they come up can make putting together or updating your resume significantly easier. Include as many details as possible so you don’t have to spend time tracking them down later.

The best productivity hack Do fewer things, better

The best productivity hack Do fewer things, better The best productivity hack Do fewer things, better “Don’t count the days. Make the days count.” - Muhammad AliSometimes, believing in yourself is not enough - self-empowerment can hinder rather than improve your productivity.Have you ever seen a truck stuck under a bridge? It feels both hilarious and absurd. Why hasn’t the driver prevented it?We all fall into that trap - we believe that willpower will help us achieve the impossible. However, our time has limited capacity, just like a bridge. When we try to do too many things, we can’t make it through. That’s why we have productivity all wrong. The idea that we can (and should) do everything is deceiving - we get stuck like a truck under a bridge.Unload your truck“Start by doing what’s necessary; then do what’s possible; and suddenly you are doing the impossible.” - Francis of AssisiBeing productive is not about doing more, but enjoying the journey. Being overloaded doesn’t help, what’s the point of getting stuck? The first step is to clear your path - remo ve the truck from under the bridge.Time is not something that we have; we make time. Rather than trying to raise the bridge’s height, you have to unload your truck. Acknowledging that you cannot add more hours to your day is critical - you have to do fewer things instead.Unfortunately, we use being busy as a badge of honor - we feel more important when we are overloaded. We end juggling as many balls as possible without realizing if they are worth our time.Being busy causes us to act mindlessly. We are running from one task to another without reflecting on why we are doing what we are doing. Busyness makes us live on autopilot.Time is not neutral - be intentional about what you choose to do.When you say yes to everything, you are saying no to what really matters. That’s the biggest issue with being busy: we end doing the wrong things. What if I tell you to focus on doing fewer things?Unload your truck. The secret of being productive lies in choosing what to do - and doing it right - instead of doing more and more.Simplify your productivity mindset“If you spend too much time thinking about a thing, you’ll never get it done.” - Bruce LeeSometimes, what’s supposed to make us more productive, adds additional load to our schedules. The ‘do more and do everything’ approach to productivity is not working - it’s a stressful trap.Focusing on doing fewer things, but better, is the opposite - it’s a liberating experience. You remove more than tasks - you reduce the guilt and stress load too. When we are busy, we don’t leave time to think, reflect, or enjoy. We are running from one task to another without being present. Your mind needs space. Silence helps us reflect. Emptiness attracts creativity. Distance brings perspective.Simplifying your productivity mindset requires following these three principles.1. Identify what’s essentialWe are an action-driven society - we admire busy people even if they don’t achieve anything. That you can do more doesn’t mean that you have to do everything. Being mindful about what you do (and don’t) is critical to eliminate unnecessary tasks. What drives your life? What really matters to you? When you remove what’s non-essential, you make time for what matters.2. Prioritize quality over quantityThe urge to check things off our lists forces us to do stuff without thinking. We don’t have time to do things right, but there’s always time to do them twice. Let’s recover the value of quality. How do you measure your own productivity?Focusing on quality is ensuring you don’t waste your limited time in doing the same thing twice.3. Focus on outcomesApproaching our work by tasks is a distraction - endless to-do lists fuel more stress. Shift your attention from doing to the impact you want to create - moving the needle matters more than how busy you are.Can you turn your to-do list into an achievement list?Connecting your work with the outcome will increase your motivation. It’s not the same going grocery shopping (a task) than preparing a meal to treat your friends (a rewarding experience).Productivity is not about doing everything, but doing what matters. Be mindful. Do fewer things, but better.Keep your load manageable“You can’t let people set your agenda in life.” - Warren BuffetEstablish clear priorities - what do you want to achieve? Productivity is not about doing more, but about making what matters happen.Prioritization is vital to recover control of your life - define your preferences or someone will do it for you. This productivity exercise will make your load manageable.1. Understand what mattersIf you don’t have clear priorities, someone will define them for you.Reflect on the impact you want to achieve in your personal and professional life. Focus on projects rather than on tasks. Start small - build a habit first rather than on trying to change the world overnight. Keep it simple.2. Prioritize your loadMake a list of all the key thi ngs/projects you want (or have) to accomplish. Capture each on a Post-it or small piece of paper. Rank them using a 1â€"5 scale: 1 being “Irrelevant” and 5 “Most Critical.”Review the initial ranking. Play around a couple of times until you feel happy. Remember you are aiming for fewer. Most people fail to focus because they believe everything is a priority. Challenge yourself.Prioritization is more than merely ranking activities from more to least important. It’s about clarifying what matters and what doesn’t.Unload your truck - eliminate the non-essentials.3. Strategize your journeyThat someone asks your something doesn’t mean you have to do it. Learn to say no. However, that doesn’t mean that you will always win - prioritization is a constant negotiation with yourself and others Eliminate unnecessary projects (Categories 1â€"2) - check out this exercise I use to coach teams get rid of unnecessary workload. Delegate projects that are not critical (Category 3) Simplify critical projects (Category 4) Allocate most of your energy and time to essential projects (Category 5) 4. Monitor your loadPractice reviewing your priorities on a regular basis. Identify what’s working and what’s not. Every bridge has a different height - adjust your load to your tolerance and availability.Find the sweet spot - be flexible but don’t change priorities all the time.5. Avoid getting stuck (tips)Learn to say ‘no’ more often. Saying no is not being rude - your choices define how you live, as I wrote here. Think twice before you say ‘yes.’ Most people accept requests or meeting invitations without checking their calendars first. Avoid overloading your schedule. Leave empty spaces for taking care of meaningful work. Block your ‘me-time.’ This doesn’t mean being selfish, but saving time for what matters to you. I mark my exercise, lunch, learning, writing, and meditation time on my calendar. No one can steal the time you block first. Create pauses in between tasks. I always protect time in-between meetings. I need to reflect after one, prepare for the next, or maybe I need a (bio/coffee/reflection) break. Eliminate the noise. Get rid of any app you don’t use. Turn off notifications when you are doing work that requires deep focus. If you are in a meeting, put away your phone and other distractions. Learn to have your mind where your body is. Be in the here and now. If you pay attention, you won’t need to do something twice. Be mindful of your energy level. I’m more focused and energetic early in the day and after 4 PM - that’s when I write, design new workshops or services. During my low-energy hours, I do research and take care of less-demanding tasks like emailing, marketing, and administrative stuff. - - - Saying yes to what matters requires eliminating the unessential. Be ready for push-backs from both yourself and others.Shift your productivity approach from doing everything to doing fewer things, better. Being busy is not a badge of honor. Unload your truck before you get stuck.Achieving what you want is more rewarding than being busy. Coworker I Trusted Telling Lies To Boss Behind My Back

Coworker I Trusted Telling Lies To Boss Behind My Back Coworker I Trusted Telling Lies To Boss Behind My Back Its important to be able to trust the people you work with. But if a coworker is telling lies to your boss or ratting you out for even the smallest mistakes it can make your work-life miserable. It can also keep you from getting ahead or anywhere at all in your job.I normally use this blog to offer advice. And I will add a few of my thoughts at the end. But Im mostly sharing these stories to help you know youre not alone. Feel free to add your own experiences.KBs coworker friend story One of my readers recently told us this in a comment. In this case, it wasnt a lie being shared, but a truth that she thought was secret:Just wanted to share something that happened to me from my previous job. Never trust someone completely!!!I thought that I had a friend at my previous place of work that I could trust and talk to. I was wrong. Whenever I told this person how I felt about the job and that I probably won’t last long, the information (in detail) was passed onto management for persona l gain. Some food for thought. Why would management trust someone that betrays a friend for personal gain? Wouldn’t that same person do the same with sensitive information from the current job when seeking a new job elsewhere, probably with a competitor?I hope this experience is of some help. ~ KBMy own sneaky co-worker story A similar thing happened to me many years ago. I was brought in to work side-by-side with another manager who welcomed me. He was always helpful and ready to lend an ear and provide support, or so it at first appeared.Well, it seems the friendly ear had a phone line direct to our boss, and was always transmitting bad things about me things that werent true or were conveyed out of context. Turns out, some of the duties I took on had once been his, and he wanted them back! His plan worked. I eventually left the job. But I never knew his weasily role in all this until after I finally had enough of my bosss constant criticism and transferred to another department . Gotta say this doesnt say much for my former boss either. Luckily my next boss was much better.Beware of workplace secrets A career coaching client Ill call her Sara told me about something that really unnerved her. The boss who had always thought of Sara as her best ally in the workplace, suddenly turned on her. No longer was she included in the daily meetings. No longer was she welcome to just drop by for a friendly chat. What happened? A man Sara trusted, someone who was also close to their boss, tricked her into sharing a secret her boss did not want shared. She knows now she was wrong, but he told her that he already knew and wanted to talk about it for their bosss protection. She fell for it.Once again, turns out jealousy was involved. He resented how close she was to their boss. So he told the boss that Sara spilled the beans. And the boss felt so betrayed by someone she trusted (Sara), she didnt give Sara a chance to explain. It wasnt until after Sara left that she realiz ed shed been set up.What does all this tell us? Does this mean we can never trust a co-worker? Are all bosses gullible and easily sold a bunch of lies or doctored truths? And, as KB asks, why would a boss trust someone who in effect is going behind the back of an office friend to make them look bad?I think the answer is not to close up and trust no one. That would be a miserable way to spend so many work hours. We cant live every moment on guard for the maybe. But we do need to be aware that people, even people who seem nice on the surface, may have their own agendas. So the best defense may be to stay friendly, but also stay aware. Be your own PR agent (without bragging) by letting your boss and others know about things youre accomplishing. And be very wary of office gossip and secrets even if its fun to feel part of the inner circle. You could be the next secret.Comments (below) are very welcome. The 5 Most Common Resume Mistakes and How to Fix Them

The 5 Most Common Resume Mistakes and How to Fix Them The 5 Most Common Resume Mistakes and How to Fix Them On average, a corporate job opening receives roughly 250 applications. In order to stay in the running for an interview, youll need a great resume. Even if you  have impressive work experience and the perfect skill set for the posted position, one simple resume mistake can get you rejected. As the team success manager at One Click, Id like to offer some advice on a few of the most common resume mistakes I see and what you can do to fix them: 1. Objective Statements This is more of a personal preference, but I think objective statements on resumes are unnecessary. It should be understood that when you apply for a job, your objective is to land the job. Instead of an objective statement, Id rather see a professional overview or summary that talks about the highlights of your career. With that being said, if you decide to include an objective statement, you should know that this is an area in which I commonly find mistakes. I cannot tell you how many resumes I have thrown into the trash for having an objective statement that says, Obtain job at [wrong company name] or Relocate to [a city the company is not in]. If you choose to include an objective statement, make sure that any identifying information is tailored to fit the correct company. 2. Including Too Much Information Another mistake I see consistently is trying to pack every experience or job youve ever held on your resume. Rather than the full novel of your career, your resume should be a synopsis. The idea that resumes should never be longer than one page is outdated, but your resume still should not take me an hour to read. No resume can (or should) include every possible duty and achievement in a job seekers life. Instead, summarize your career by highlighting the best and most relevant parts. 3. Your Information Is Difficult to Find The next mistake you might be making on your resume is forcing the reviewer to work too hard to find the information theyre looking for. An experienced hiring manager is going to spend  less than 30 seconds reviewing each resume. If they dont find what theyre looking for in a matter of seconds, they might move on to the next resume. With this in mind, make sure to list the most important information first. Your name, professional summary, and most current job title should all be placed at the top of the page. In addition to this, use a layout that makes relevant information easy to find. I advocate using reverse chronological order to list jobs and bullet points for job highlights rather than paragraph format. 4. Not Tailoring Your Resume to the Position A big mistake that will hurt you during your job search is not tailoring your resume to the position. Its a good idea to have a master resume file, but it is not smart to use the same resume for every application. The positions youre applying for will probably have similar duties and qualifications, but each company will almost certainly place more emphasis on specific skills and experience than the others do. When reading the job posting, think about how you can adjust your resume so that the hiring manager sees how you fit the job description quickly. That usually means rearranging the bullet points in your experience section to place the most relevant tasks at the top of the page. You may also want to adjust your professional summary to highlight appropriate achievements. 5. Forgetting the Cover Letter As a huge proponent of cover letters, I cringe when I see applications without them. Cover letters are a great way to set yourself apart from other candidates, flaunt your personal brand, and explain any gaps in your resume. Unless the company specifically tells you not to write a cover letter, you should always provide a unique, tailored cover letter when applying for a job. â€" Dont let a simple resume mistake be the reason you didnt get a job. Be aware of these common mistakes and correct any that might appear on your resume.  With a great resume (and some luck), youll land an interview or two in no time! 7 trend predictions for the workplace in 2019, according to experts

7 trend predictions for the workplace in 2019, according to experts 7 trend predictions for the workplace in 2019, according to experts Another lap around the sun, another 12 months to make goals, another four quarters to propel your career and make some moves. There’s a reason so many people look forward to the beginning of a New Year since it signals an opportunity to refresh, reflect and restart their lives, perspective and for most, their careers.Industry experts also track change and progress year over year, allowing them to predict trends that will emerge in the workplace. From how companies will hire,  to the best practices for employees continuing their education, 2019 will bring a shift in the professional workforce and setting. Here, leading career experts and forecasters share their insights:Companies will focus on great social and emotional intelligenceAs the number of millennials not only enter the workforce but start to lead teams and get promoted to the c-level suite, business coach Christine Agro predicts companies will zero-in on communication. More specifically, they will become smarter about the w ay they develop strategies surrounding internal and external best practices.“There is a greater awareness that not all people react and respond the same way and that past experiences affect how we communicate and what we communicate, coupled with differences in generational approaches,” she continues. “In order for companies to create positive and effective workplace culture, the healthy development of advanced social and emotional intelligence - particularly at the executive level - is going to be essential in attracting and retaining high level, skilled employees.”Companies will embrace automation.Over the next few years, head U.S. Analyst at the trend-predicting company Stylus shares rapidly advancing automation will revolutionize our working lives. How so? One word: robotics.“We are already seeing more fluid, interactive forms of collaboration between people and robots that complement each other’s strengths,” she continues. However, adapting to the shifting dynami c may take time, since Alison Gough says many workers will feel wary of automation. However, she notes companies that enable trust-based, easy and natural ‘co-bot’ workplace relationships will reap the benefits. In fact, Pennsylvania’s Carnegie Mellon launched America’s first undergraduate degree in Artificial Intelligence this fall, making a case for how much more we will rely on robotics across many industries in the quarters to come.Education will continue to be encouragedMore than ever, there are numerous resources available for eager professionals who want to continuously improve their skill set. Whether they desire to learn a completely new leg of the business or they want to refresh an area they already have experience in, career expert Steve Grant predicts the year ahead will bring a heightened awareness for the need of education long after graduation.“2019 will continue to see knowledge seekers obtaining the additional training they want and need but companies will also continue to push their employees to do more of such readings, lectures as lessons,” he explains. From LinkedIn Learning, Busuu and Coursera to Udemy, edX and The Khan Academy, many lessons and modules meet budget constraints and should be an ask of any employee who wants to exceed.Retention will remain a growing concernWhile previous generations remained committed to the same job from the time they were fresh out of college until retirement, chief learning officer at MentorcliQ Paul MacCartney explains millennials have a much shorter attention span. He explains the average job stay is now 2.9 years, especially as more professionals branch out to start their own companies or become freelancers. This could be beneficial and lucrative or the individual, but it makes employers wary and prompts them to double-down on their retention strategy. “For the long term, companies need to retain top talent for a longer duration of tenure. This is what drives succession programs, he explai ns.Career expert Jeff Kohl echoes MacCartney, added the issue on everyone’s mind is a shrinking workforce - both due to the new millennial way of approaching success and the fact we’re entering the age where baby boomers are retiring.“A smaller workforce creates numerous challenges including finding labor and paying them competitively,” he continues. “There is also the challenge of creating a fun culture that makes new hires happy and keeps current employees engaged so you don’t lose them.“This is the time to analyze your company culture. People don’t run away for a few dollars an hour, they run away from bad management.”Companies will be wishy-washy on remote-workIn recent years, many companies have adopted the thriving ‘gig’ economy, hiring freelancers to take on some of the deliverables in a speedy, contracted fashion. This has inspired many full-time professionals to bargain for the ability to work remotely or have a varied schedule that thrives on flexibi lity. Argo says this may shift in 2019, predicting the pendulum could swing away from work-from-wherever and back to an in-office mandate.“I see this as a reaction to policies that have gotten too frayed and taken advantage of, resulting in unquantifiable work hours and a breakdown in cohesive team dynamics,” she continues. However, she notes it won’t solve the issues employers might attribute to remote working since the heart of the issue is not having a clear and defined company culture. Within time, they could again be open to talented professionals who prefer to be productive outside of a corporate setting. How come? They’ll realize what matters most.“Although geographically disparate, this trend speaks to the emerging employee pool in industries where employers see a skill as the most valuable asset, not a person’s physical presence,” she explains. “Great communities and relationships can be built via video conference, and those companies that understand how to m ake room for remote workers will continue to attract those that are highly skilled, think organically and oftentimes outside the box and who desire new experiences.”A surge in mentoring programsAnd not merely volunteer ones outside of the office, but corporate programs that are a top priority in developing culture, according to MacCartney. He notes a study conducted in 2017 by the Association for Talent Development found 71 percent of Fortune 500 companies already have this in place.Whether this is a pairing, a monthly event or a course that new employees take, there is a priceless value on mentoring, especially since it has aided so many people in the advancement of their career. In fact, the same study found 75 percent of executives credit mentors with helping them to arrive at their success and tenure.A renewed approach to wellnessThough wellness has been a hot topic in the workplace for years, Gough says companies will be hyper-aware of their employees well being than ever bef ore in 2019. Not only does this mean implementing a health-focused culture that supports productivity, but modeling the open-floor plan to be more conducive to the need for quiet.“Next year, we’ll see more of emphasis on mental wellbeing as correctives for noisy and privacy-lacking open plan offices, and biophilia is incorporated into spaces to restore, relax and revive workers,” she explains. “Incorporating greenery seems obvious, but an increased awareness of biophilic design’s positive impact on wellbeing is framing these new workspace needs.”She also adds that more subtle tactile and visual cues will also be used to trigger our brains into perceiving a sense of nature through natural-mimicking lighting, sounds, and air quality, for a reassuring essential connection.

Stop competing with your coworkers. Its not healthy

Stop competing with your coworkers. It's not healthy Stop competing with your coworkers. It's not healthy With more women entering the workforce than ever before, and our dream jobs becoming increasingly more attainable as a result of social media, competition in the work force is at an all-time high. As much as competition can be advantageous, it is often only healthy to a point.A bout of healthy competition can be used to keep us on track and maintain our motivation, but how do we recognize when this feeling is no longer beneficial? We are all individuals with a unique skill set trying to advance in our careers, but when is competition no longer healthy? When our personal goals start to become greater than the goals of the company, or when our progress starts to be at the expense of a colleague’s, we have to reevaluate our motives. What can we do when we start spelling TEAM with an “I”? Below are four simple ways we can be better at using our competitive energy to benefit everyone on the team!Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Ladders’ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more!“I may excel at X, but I need to work on Y”As much as many type A individuals may not like to admit it, we all have a set of weaknesses in addition to our strengths. Gasp! Jot down in your phone or notebook the skills you rock at and the tasks you could use an extra hand. Get Tips for Starting a Pet Boutique

Get Tips for Starting a Pet Boutique Get Tips for Starting a Pet Boutique Pet boutiques, part of the 50 billion dollars per year pet industry, provide high-quality products to pet owners. Gain Experience Prior employment in an animal related field is always beneficial when starting a pet boutique business. Experience in retail sales, especially as a pet product sales representative, will prove particularly useful. If you have never worked in a retail pet sales environment it would be wise to find a part or full-time position with an established business to learn the ins and outs of the industry. There is no substitute for hands-on experience. Business Considerations Before opening your pet boutique you must take into account various business and legal considerations. You should consult your accountant regarding the advantages and disadvantages of forming your business as a sole proprietorship, limited liability company, or other entity. You should also contact your local government with regard to any permits or licenses that could be necessary for your business. Obtaining an insurance policy should also be on the planning checklist. Choose a Location You have to determine whether you will offer your products online via a website or through a brick and mortar retail location. A web-based store has a much lower start-up cost. A retail store offers additional exposure and customer traffic, but will obviously involve added costs for rent, employee salaries, and insurance. Many boutiques offer both online and retail shopping options. Name Your Business Your pet boutique business should have a name that makes it stand out from the crowd and especially “big box” chain pet stores. Emphasis should be placed on the unique, high-quality goods and services that you can provide through your boutique location. Select Your Products A pet boutique can carry a wide assortment of products and pet care items. Some boutiques specialize in creating customized items. Such services could include letting customers choose their own materials and design for custom pet bedding, or engraving pet identification tags and collar nameplates. Handmade local leather goods, such as collars and leashes, are often popular purchases for pet owners. Generally, the inventory of a pet boutique can include pet care supplies, clothing, bedding, travel carriers, a variety of toys and treats, and gift baskets. Some boutiques also operate a pet bakery and create all-natural gourmet treats. Animal themed human apparel may also be of interest to consumers, especially to those owners who are fans of a particular breed. Breed specific items can be hot sellers, so it is wise to keep items relating to the popular breeds in stock. Marketing Strategies There are many ways to advertise your pet boutique. It is always a good idea to try to align your boutique with upscale women’s clothing boutiques, interior design studios, and other high-end shops. You can approach these high-end venues and ask if you can leave your business card or even develop a reciprocal advertising venture between your businesses. Other venues where you can advertise your pet boutique may include veterinary clinics, dog grooming shops, doggie day care businesses, supermarkets, retail shopping centers, and office complexes. Events like dog shows and pet industry expos are also excellent places to set up a booth to offer samples and demonstrations of products. Additional advertising options include placing an ad in the phone directory, creating a personalized web page, or taking advantage of advertising opportunities with local media outlets. If you create a website be sure to allow your customers to subscribe to a mailing list for a weekly or monthly newsletter featuring special offers, events, and coupons. Another idea to gain exposure is donating gift baskets to charity events and fundraisers. You can include your business card and logo to advertise your pet boutique while helping a good cause. Over time word of mouth will become an excellent source of customer traffic. Price Your Products The most effective way to price your product line is to investigate what your competitors charge for similar items. You can gain a great deal of knowledge by searching online and visiting shops in your local area. Be sure to price your products competitively. Business Outlook According to the Pet Product Manufacturers Association (APPMA), the pet product industry draws in 50 billion dollars a year. The APPMA estimates that there are 78.2 million dogs and 86.4 million cats kept as pets, and that number is expected to increase each year. Pet boutique businesses should show continued growth as pet owners have steadily increased spending on their animals each year according to the APPMA research studies.
